Note: Electrical test of damping control switches (actuators) is considered in Section 12, Chapter 5.

Functional checks can be done as follows:

1. Open the lid and remove the rubber strut cover to access the front suspension switches or open the trunk and remove the rear inner panel to access the rear suspension switches.

2. Block the rear wheels and set the parking brake. Raise the front of the vehicle so that the wheels are off the ground and support it securely on the jack stands.

3. Start the engine (ensure good ventilation of the room) and increase the speed so that the speedometer shows 9 miles per hour or more.

Warning: If the vehicle is lowered from the jack stand, serious damage may occur.

4. Have an assistant operate the damping control switches (on the dashboard). In the "AUTO" switch position - off, the switches (actuator) should rotate the shock absorber piston rods approximately 60° when the switch is in the position "SPORT/NORMAL".

5. If none of the switches (actuators) does not behave as described, check the fuse or open wires, otherwise invite a Mazda dealer to check. If only one of the switches is faulty, check the wiring and if it is OK, replace the switch.

6. When the check is complete, stop the engine and lower the vehicle.

Removal and installation

7. To remove the rear switch, first remove the rear suspension strut (Chapter 9). (This is recommended by manufacturers, but in fact it may not be necessary).

8. To remove the front switch, first disconnect the electrical connector.

9. Remove the mounting screws and lift the top switch off the pillar.

10. Assembly is carried out in reverse order.
