Note: New and remanufactured cylinder heads are usually available from parts stores. Special tools are also not required, so you can replace the block head yourself.
1. Removing the cylinder head involves removing and dismantling the intake and exhaust valves and their associated components. If they are still installed, remove the camshaft and rocker arm assembly from the cylinder head. Label the parts, or store them separately, so that they must be reinstalled in their original position.
2. Before removing the valves, also mark the valve guides (photo).
After removing the valve components, store them instead in a plastic bag so as not to mix with other valve components
3 Compress the valve spring on the first valve with a spring extractor and remove the holders (photo). Carefully release the valve spring puller and remove the valve spring cotter, spring seat, valve stem seal and valve. If the valve is stuck in the guide, push it back and clean the area around the groove) holder with a fine file or whetstone (photo).
Use a valve spring remover to compress the spring and remove the valve stem retainers | If the valve stem does not come out of the guide freely, lower the valve into place and file the top of the valve stem with a small file |
4. Repeat the procedure for the remaining valves. Remember to keep all the parts for each valve together so they will need to be reinstalled in the same place.
5. After removing the valves, the block head must be thoroughly cleaned and inspected.
