9.1.1. Maintenance of the ignition distributor
The distributor cap must be cleaned regularly inside and out to remove any remaining carbon, dust and moisture. The distributor rotor also needs to be cleaned. For cleaning, use a cloth soaked in gasoline. When cleaning, simultaneously check the distributor cap for scratches.
Replace the distributor if the contacts are very worn. Brass contacts should never be filed or ground. With the distributor cap removed, apply 2-3 drops of oil to the inside of the distributor shaft to lubricate the bearing. If the breaker contacts are replaced, there is a thin oil film on the distributor cam.
The outer surfaces of all high voltage wires must be cleaned and protected from moisture to ensure proper current flow to the ignition system.
From time to time, pull all the wires out of the ignition distributor, clean the connecting ends and check. Wires must not be shortened to improve bad ends. The wires need to be replaced.
9.1.2. Removing and installing the ignition distributor
[The original article is on: MAZBOOK]
If the distributor is removed from the engine, it must be reinstalled in the same location to maintain ignition timing. On this basis, all the parts must be marked in an acceptable manner and, without turning the engine, the ignition distributor must be inserted so that it enters the grip in the same position. The following work needs to be carried out (the same for all engines):
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove the ignition wire from the distributor cap or remove the cap by unscrewing it from the distributor.
- Remove the plug on the distributor wall and disconnect the wire from the membrane mechanism of the vacuum ignition advance regulator.
- Rotate the engine until the piston of the first cylinder reaches the top dead center of the compression stroke and mark the position of the top of the runner with a scriber on the outer edge of the distributor housing.
- Loosen the terminal bolts on the distributor and pull it forward out of the engine as shown in the figure 155 for standard 8 valve engine. For other engines, the distributor is removed to the right, standing in front of the car.
Figure 155. Removing the ignition distributor
If the engine does not turn over or no repair work has been performed on the distributor, return the distributor to its original position. If the distributor was disassembled or needs to be installed after engine repair, proceed as follows:
- Move the piston of the first cylinder to the top dead center during the compression stroke, i.e., both valves of this cylinder should be closed (remove the cylinder head cover for this - both valves should have clearance). The grooves of the V-belt pulley marked in white (ignition point) must be located against the pin on the drive gear housing, as shown in Figure 156.
Figure 156. The V-belt pulley grooves and the arrow on the drive gear housing must be in line to set the engine to top dead center (1) or ignition point (2).
- Turn the distributor shaft using a screw wheel until both markings shown in Figure 157 on the distributor shaft and the distributor housing are exactly opposite each other.
Figure 157. Lubricate the "O" seal with engine oil and rotate the distributor shaft until the two position marks (2) are opposite each other.
- Insert a new "O" seal (figure 157) and install the ignition distributor so that the ignition distributor rotor points to the designated spot on the edge of the distributor housing and the marking on the distributor housing is in line with the nut on the cylinder head cover.
- The distributor should be secured in this position, but only temporarily, since the ignition point must be established.
- Using a grip, engage the engine distributor with the camshaft and secure the bolts.
- Reconnect all the wires and insert the vacuum lines into the distributor.
- Finally, check the flash point as described in Chapter 9.2.
9.1.3. Repair of the ignition distributor
- Due to the sensitive structure of the transistor ignition system components, no work other than removing and installing the distributor can be carried out. If the distributor is worn out, we recommend installing a new one.
- If any problems are detected in the ignition system, you should always contact a Mazda workshop, which has the necessary equipment and experience to eliminate any defects.
