Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence

Removal
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the spark plugs.
3. Drain the coolant.
4. Remove the air intake pipe.
5. Remove the resonator.
6. Remove the throttle and accelerator cables.
7. Remove the brake vacuum hose, fuel hose, radiator hoses, cruise control vacuum hose, and heater hoses.
8. Disconnect all wires from the head.
9. Remove the water pipe bolts and nuts.
10. Remove the water pump pulley and drive belt.
11. Remove the air intake and fuel line.
12. Remove the intake manifold.
13. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
14. Remove the valve cover.
15. Remove the timing belt covers and timing belt.
16. Remove the power steering pump and alternator drive belts.
17. Remove the generator bracket.
18. Remove the ignition distributor.
19. Remove the power steering pump bolts and set the pump aside.
20. Inspect the head and remove any parts that interfere with head removal.
21. Loosen the head bolts in several quarter-turn increments. Loosen the bolts in the reverse order of tightening.
22. Remove the bolts and remove the head.
23. Inspect the head.
Installation
1. Thoroughly clean and inspect the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block for scratches and damage. Small scratches can be removed with fine sandpaper.

2. Clean the head bolt threads and the cylinder block threads using dies and taps of the appropriate size.
3. Install a new head gasket.
4. Install the head onto the cylinder block.
5. Lubricate the bolt threads with oil, insert the bolts and tighten them finger tight.
6. Tighten the bolts in several stages in the sequence shown.
7. Install the remaining parts and assemblies, connect all hoses and wires. Fill with coolant and check engine operation.
