11.2.1. Checking the gearbox oil level
The work to control the oil level in the gearbox has already been described in chapter 1.6.8.
11.2.2. Changing the gearbox oil
- Place the vehicle on a level floor and remove the tachometer gear.
- Unscrew the gearbox shown in the picture on the bottom side 171 plug and drain the oil into a container that should have a capacity of more than 3.5 liters.
Figure 171. Position of the gearbox drain plug
Clean the plug thoroughly and screw it back in. Using a watering can and a hose, pour oil through the hole for the tachometer gear. The required oil quantity is 3.5 liters and only Dextron II or M III should be used, however, SAE 80W-90 or SAE 90 oil can also be used. It is best to reuse the oil that was in the gearbox.
11.2.3. Replacing the drive shaft sealing rings
- If leaks are detected at the output of the drive shaft from the gearbox, the sealing rings can be replaced without removing the gearbox.
- Place the front of the car on jack stands and drain the gearbox oil.
- Unscrew the front wheels and remove the lower bank sheet.
- Remove the anti-roll bar from the lower control arm.
- Loosen the wishbone bolts and push the wishbone down.
- Separate the steering knuckle from the connections on the wishbone.
- Remove the cotter pin from the slotted nut, remove the nut and remove the tie rod end from the steering knuckle arm.
- Grasp the steering knuckle and pull outward until the drive shaft disengages from the transmission. Secure the removed shaft to the front wheel suspension with a piece of wire.
- Press the oil seal ring out of the gearbox using a screwdriver.
- Lubricate the new sealing lip with gearbox oil and press the ring in until the outer side is trimmed.
- Replace the retaining ring on the end of the drive shaft.
- Pull the steering knuckle outward and insert the shaft into the gearbox. Press the steering knuckle inwards briefly and firmly until the ring snaps into place. Pull the steering knuckle back and forth several times to check that the safety wheel is seated.
- Mount the transverse suspension arm on the steering knuckle and tighten the screws to 43-55 Nm.
- Install the tie rod end, tighten the nuts to 30-45 Nm and insert a new cotter pin.
- Install the stabilizer rod. Tighten the connecting bolt nuts until the threaded ends protrude 20.1 mm.
- Screw the drain plugs into the gearbox to 40-60 Nm and fill with oil as described in the last chapter.
