The following additional works are carried out:
- Remove the electrical wire from the ignition distributor (4).
- For an electronically controlled transmission, disconnect the air flow meter connection (5) and remove the air filter (6). Also remove the large air filter hose (7); for other gearboxes, remove the air supply hose (8).
- Disconnect the wire connections (10) from the starter interlock switch, solenoid switch, pulse generator and fluid temperature gauge switch (with an electronic gearbox). Also release the wire (11) connecting the battery to the body.
- Disconnect the oil line hoses.
- Seal the open ends in a suitable manner to prevent dirt from getting in.
- Unscrew the three bolts of the shield (25) for the torque converter and remove the shield.
- Remove the gearshift cable (12) and unscrew the throttle cable (13) from the gearbox wall.
- Remove the torque converter nuts. To do this, turn the crankshaft until the nuts appear in the hole one by one.
- Place a jack under the gearbox and lift it slightly. Place a wooden block between the gearbox and the jack to avoid damaging the gearbox.
- Raise the gearbox until it is free. The gearbox is installed in reverse order. The instructions given for a manual transmission are in most cases also applicable to an automatic transmission, however the following points must be observed particularly carefully.
- Apply a small amount of general purpose grease to the torque converter bushing and the centering hole in the drive plate. Install the gearbox so that it fits onto the studs and is pressed against the engine. Tighten the gearbox bolts to 90-120 Nm. Screw in the converter nuts one by one and tighten to a torque of 45-62 Nm.
- Screw on the protective cover of the converter.
- Screw on the oil cooler pipe.
- Pour 6.8 liters of oil intended for automatic transmission into the gearbox.
- Start the engine, engage the gearbox stages sequentially and finally check the fluid level again.
