Removal
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Warning. If your vehicle has an anti-theft audio system, before disconnecting the battery. make sure you have the unlock code.
2. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation valve and all hoses from the cover.
3. Mark the high-voltage wires, then disconnect them from the spark plugs.
4. Remove the power steering hose bracket mounting bolts (Fig. 4.4).

5. On models produced since 1996, disconnect the crankshaft position sensor (see chapter 6).
6. Loosen the bolts securing the cover to the cylinder head in sequence. the opposite of that shown in Fig. 4.13.
7. Disconnect all remaining hoses and tubes from the cover and remove the cover. If the cap is stuck, tap it with a mallet - do not try to pry it away from the cylinder head with a screwdriver.
Installation
8. Before installing the cover, clean the surface of the cylinder head that mates with the cover. Scrape off any remaining old gasket, then wipe the surface with a cloth soaked in acetone. If the mating surfaces are not clean enough, the joint will leak after assembly
9. Also clean the mating surface of the cover.
10. Apply a bead of RTV sealant to one side of the gasket and install the gasket on the cover (figure 4.10).

11. Apply sealant to the surface of the cylinder head in the places shown in the figure 4.11.

12. Install the cylinder head cover in place and tighten the mounting bolts by hand.
13. In the sequence shown in the figure 4.13, tighten the cover mounting bolts in two or three passes until the required torque is achieved.

14. Reinstall all previously removed parts, hoses and wires in the reverse order of their removal.

15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
