The following points must be especially observed:
- Lightly lubricate the screw thread of the armature shaft and the rotating support of the starter drive engagement lever. Do not lubricate the bearing and gear.
- Place the connecting ring onto the armature shaft with the larger side facing outward.
- Insert the safety ring into the groove of the anchor shaft and clamp the shaft with the ring in a vice. Close the vice, open it again, turn the shaft. Repeat this operation until the ring fits well into the groove around the circle.
- Connect the anchor to the shaft and use a screwdriver to hit the connecting ring down through the safety ring. Check that the connecting ring fits perfectly on the retaining ring
- The drive engagement lever must be correctly positioned in a circle (figure 255).
- Install the brushes and mount the brush holder crossbar
- Install the bearing shield of the collector.
After completing the assembly, connect the 12-volt battery according to the figure 261 and measure the gap between the plane of the starter gear and the generator cover on the drive side (figure 262). If it is not between 0.5 and 2.0 mm, the washers under the solenoid switch are changed according to their thickness.

If you have an ammeter, you can leave the starter running without a load. The current readings will be present if the starter operates at the specified current strength and, in addition, engages flawlessly. Make connections in accordance with the drawing 263.
