Checking oil pressure (Mazda Capella GF)

1. Low oil pressure may be a sign that the engine needs repair. The low engine oil pressure warning light (often referred to as the "dumb light") does not serve the diagnostic circuits of the lubrication system. The light comes on only when the oil pressure becomes dangerously low. The oil pressure indicator on the dashboard is a rather crude device, but it still gives the driver more information than a light bulb. It is best to check the lubrication system with a mechanical (non-electric) using a pressure gauge in combination with a good tachometer allows you to obtain a fairly comprehensive description of the lubrication system's operation and compare it with the manufacturer's specifications for this model and year of manufacture.

2. Locate the oil pressure sensor on your engine for the instrument panel indicator (figure 2.2, a, b).


3. Unscrew the oil pressure sensor and screw the pressure gauge into its place (you may need a suitable adapter for this).



4. Connect an accurate tachometer to the engine, following the manufacturer's instructions.

5. Measure the oil pressure with the engine fully warmed up and running and compare the results with Technical data at the beginning of this chapter. If the measured pressure is significantly lower than specified, the bearings and/or oil pressure sensor are worn and require attention.
