The Mazda 626 design series is equipped with either servo control corresponding to the engine speed or electronic servo control. The servo control system must not be disassembled. If the steering is damaged, a spare one must be installed. The following text describes only the simplest tasks that can be performed with the servo control installed.

16.3.1. Removal and installation

Removal and installation of the steering control is carried out in accordance with the instructions given in chapter 16.1.1.

16.3.2. Checking the tension of the V-belt of the hydraulic power steering pump

The tension of the power steering pump drive belt is measured in the middle of the section between the tension roller and the pump belt pulley on a gasoline engine, and between the vacuum pump belt pulley and the lower camshaft belt pulley on a diesel engine. Figure 211 shows the measurement locations in detail.

Figure 211. To install the drive belt of the hydraulic power steering pump. Above - for a gasoline engine, below - for a diesel engine. The text provides references to bolts (A) and (B). 1. Set bolt; 2. Fixing nut; 3. Drive roller; 4 Drive pulley of belt transmission; 5 Hydraulic power steering pump; 6. Vacuum pump; 7. Rear pulley of the camshaft belt drive; 8. Power steering pump.

Press the belt in the middle with your thumb and check that the deflection is 9-11 mm for the used belt (if it worked for more than 5 minutes) for a gasoline engine or 7-8 mm for a diesel engine. If a new belt is installed, these values should be 8-10 mm for a gasoline engine or 7-8 mm for a diesel engine.

If necessary, carry out the installation as follows:

For a gasoline engine

  • Using Figure 211, loosen the tension roller nuts (2) and move the tension roller mounting bolt (1) until the desired tension is achieved.
  • Tighten the tension roller nuts to 50–60 Nm.

In a diesel engine

  • Using the bottom drawing in the figure 211, loosen both pump bolts (A) and (B).
  • Using a strong screwdriver, push the vacuum pump outward until tension is achieved.
  • Tighten bolt (B) to a tightening torque of 50–60 Nm, bolt (A) to 37–52 Nm (in this sequence).

16.3.3. Bleeding the steering system

  • Place the car on a flat surface.
  • Warm up the engine and stop it.
  • Turn the steering wheel fully five times in both directions. Check the fluid level. If the level has dropped, turn the steering wheel several times more.
  • Run the engine at idle speed and turn the steering wheel from one direction to the other to increase the fluid temperature and push out all the air.
  • If necessary, add fluid (how it is used in automatic transmissions to equalize the fluid level). If the steering system has been emptied, it must be laid down and the air removed in the manner described above.

16.3.4. Changing the fluid

If the fluid has been in the system for a long time, the power steering pump or steering system has been removed, or the system oil has contained air, it must be replaced.

  • Place the front of the car on jack stands.
  • After releasing the clamp, remove the drain hose from the receiver and drain the liquid from it into a container provided.
  • Turn the steering wheel from one direction to the other until all fluid is removed from the system.
  • Fill the system and bleed air as described in chapter 14.3.3.
