Caution! The engine must cool down completely.
Removal
1. Release the pressure in the fuel system.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Drain the coolant from the engine and radiator.
4. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
5. Remove the air intake pipe.
6. Remove the spark plugs.
7. Remove the intake manifold.
8. Remove the exhaust manifold.
9. Remove the cylinder head cover.
10. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt itself.

11. Remove the power steering pump and alternator drive belts.
12. Remove the generator bracket.
13. Remove the crankshaft sensor and the ignition distributor or ignition coil.
14. Remove the bolts securing the power steering pump and set the pump aside without disconnecting the hoses from it.

15. Disconnect the hoses, remove the four bolts and disconnect the coolant bypass pipe. Disconnect all hoses and wires that interfere with removal of the cylinder head.
16. Remove the camshafts and tappets.

17. Using the reverse sequence of tightening, loosen in several approaches (1/4 turn each) cylinder head bolts.
18. Remove the cylinder head.
19. Clean the inside of the head thoroughly (see subsection 3.2.10).
Installation
1. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block.
2. Inspect the head and block surfaces for deep scratches and other damage. If the surface is not badly damaged, it can be treated with fine sandpaper.
3. Using a tap of the appropriate size and compressed air, clean the cylinder head bolt holes.
4. Install the new head gasket with the TOP mark facing up and install the head.

5. Insert the new head bolts and tighten them in several steps in the sequence shown.
6. Install the remaining parts, fill with oil and coolant.
7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
