Checking the starter motor without removing it from the car
If the starter motor does not turn when the key is turned in the ignition switch, on vehicles with an automatic transmission, make sure the selector lever is in the «parking» or «neutral».
Make sure the battery is charged and check that the wires at the battery terminals and the starter traction relay are secure.
If, when the key is turned in the ignition switch, the starter motor does not rotate, but the traction relay clicks when the battery is fully charged, then the relay contacts or the starter motor are faulty.
If the clicks of the traction relay are not heard when the key is turned in the ignition switch, then the traction relay is faulty or there is an open in the electrical circuit of the relay.
Pic. 13.15. Using a jumper (1) for connecting terminals «IN» And «M» traction relay to test the performance of the starter motor
To test the motor, connect a jumper between the terminals «IN» And «M» on the traction relay (pic. 13.15). If the electric motor rotates, then it is working, and the fault should be sought in the traction relay, ignition switch or wires. It should be noted that the motor will not rotate the crankshaft in this test, since the traction relay that engages the starter gear with the flywheel ring gear is excluded from the power circuit by a jumper.
If the electric motor does not rotate, remove the starter assembly with the traction relay for disassembly, inspection, repair or replacement.
