The carrier shaft, i.e. the entire wheel hub support, must be replaced if the support rings on it have rotated, the threads of the nuts are damaged, and the carrier shaft is bent. The rear wheel hub, i.e. the brake drum or brake disc, must be removed as described in chapter 15.1.1.
  • For drum brakes, loosen the union nut of the wheel brake cylinder from the rear side of the brake caliper disc. Suck out the leaking brake fluid. Unscrew the brake caliper disc with the brake pads from the carrier shaft and set it aside without damaging the handbrake cable.
  • For disc brakes, unscrew the mudguard.
  • With the ABS installed, unscrew the wheel speed sensor and remove it.
  • When steering two wheels from the bottom of the wheel hub support, unscrew the trailing arm nuts, as well as the nuts and bolts of both transverse suspension arms, and release both bolts that hold the carrier shaft on the bottom of the shock absorber strut.
  • Leave the wishbone and trailing arm rod at the other end secured.
  • When steering four wheels, remove the clamp bolt from the underside of the wheel hub support and press the wishbone down until the connecting pins come out of the connection. Unscrew the ABS sensor and remove it. Unscrew the anti-roll bar arm from the rear of the wheel hub support. The stabilizer can be left on the rocker arm. After the steering knuckle joint was released from the steering knuckle arm (using a puller), you can remove the wheel hub support. Check the bearing shaft for wear at the bearing seating areas, on the working surfaces for the sealing wheels and the threads of the bearing shaft. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, observing the following points:
  • Carrier shaft (wheel hub support) place it loosely on the shock absorber strut and place a jack under the strut. Raise the shock absorber until it is under tension (the body is also lifted from the trestles), and tighten the bolts and nuts to a tightening torque of 93–120 Nm.
  • When steering two wheels, connect the trailing arm of the suspension (bolts or nuts, depending on the type of brake). Tighten nuts or washers by hand. The final tightening is carried out when the wheels are placed on the ground.
  • Install the brake caliper disc and tighten the bolts to 46-60 Nm. Tighten them crosswise. However, the brake pads must not be contaminated. With the disc brake installed, tighten the mudguard to 16-23 Nm for two-wheel steering or 46-67 Nm for four-wheel steering.
  • Install the brake drum or brake disc as described in Chapter 15.1.3.
  • Install the ABS sensor, if necessary, and tighten the bolts to 16-23 Nm. Screw the wiring harness in place using the bolt (11-25 Nm).
  • For four-wheel steering, connect the suspension bracket to the ball joint and tighten the nuts and clamp bolts to 43–54 N⋅m. Reconnect the tie rod, tighten this nut to 29–44 N⋅m, and reinsert the cotter pin. Install the anti-roll bar arm and tighten the bolts to 37–46 Nm.
  • Connect the brake line (drum brake). Bleed the brake system as described in the "Brakes" section. For disc brakes, tighten the disc brake caliper to 45-67 Nm.
  • Lower the vehicle onto its wheels and tighten the wishbone and trailing arm bolts and nuts to 86–120 Nm.
