The cylinder head can be removed with the engine installed, and this work will be discussed in the following description. If the engine is already disassembled, you can save on preparatory work. Most of the work has already been described in Chapters 2.1 (engine removal) and 2.2 (engine disassembly) and further works are given in abbreviated form. Removing the cylinder head with the engine installed is necessary, for example, to renew the cylinder head or to grind the valves.

2.4.11. Gasoline engine (except DOHC engine

)
  • Disconnect the terminals of the wire connected to the battery terminal.
  • Empty the cooling system (chapter 4.1).
  • Disconnect the automatic throttle cable.
  • Remove the air intake pipe from the pump-carburetor engine.
  • Remove the air filter from a carburetor engine.
  • Remove the spark plug wires one by one. Mark the wires.
  • Disconnect the power hose.
  • Remove the upper cooling hose.
  • Remove the heating hose.
  • Disconnect the low pressure hose of the self-boosting brake mechanism.
  • Crush the three-way switch with solenoid drive.
  • Disconnect the engine wiring harness from all terminals and release the engine.
  • For carbureted models using unleaded gasoline, close the exhaust gas recirculation line.
  • Unscrew the exhaust system heat shield.
  • Remove the spark plugs.
  • Remove the ignition distributor.
  • Remove the fuel pump (carburetor engine).
  • Disconnect the throttle control cable from the carburetor and support. The end of the cable is held by a roller in the throttle rocker arm.
  • Remove the intake manifold together with the carburetor or with the bracket of the pump-carburetor engine.
  • Loosen the brushless alternator drive belt and remove the V-belt.
  • Remove the brushless alternator and unscrew the mounting clamp.
  • For a pump-carburetor engine, remove the brackets from the head side.
  • Reply upper timing belt guard.
  • Turn the engine until the piston of the first cylinder is at the top dead center, then remove the toothed belt as described in the relevant chapter.
  • For vehicles with air injection systems, disconnect the wires.
  • Remove the cylinder head cover.
  • Remove the cylinder head as described when disassembling the engine.

2.4.1.2. Removing the cylinder head - DOHC engine

  • Disconnect the battery clamps and drain the coolant.
  • Unscrew the cover in the middle of the cylinder head housing and remove it.
  • Pull out the spark plug wires, disconnect them from the cylinder head and unscrew the spark plugs.
  • Remove the accelerator control cable. To do this, unscrew the mounting bracket and remove the roller.
  • Remove the air intake pipe.
  • Disconnect the fuel hose. At this point, fuel will start to spill out. Seal the ends of the hoses with appropriate bolts.
  • Disconnect the upper cooling hose, heating hose and brake booster hose.
  • For unleaded gasoline engines, disconnect the evaporative canister hose and the EGR valve wire.
  • Disconnect all electrical connections, including the housing, from the engine.
  • Unscrew the exhaust manifold heat shield, release the manifold connection and remove the pipe.
  • Unscrew the exhaust manifold bracket and remove the entire manifold.
  • Remove the ignition distributor.
  • On the drive side, remove the engine mount brackets.
  • Remove the upper timing belt cover.
  • Remove the timing belt tensioner spring and remove the timing belt as described in the relevant chapter.
  • Remove the cylinder head cover and unscrew the cylinder head as described when disassembling the engine in chapter 2.2.2.

2.4.1.3. Removing the cylinder head - diesel engine

  • Disconnect the wire from the battery terminal and drain the cooling system.
  • Remove the air filter and disconnect the brake booster hose.
  • Remove the belt cover, release the vacuum pump belt and remove it.
  • Disconnect the power hose. Seal the ends of the hoses with appropriate bolts to prevent fuel from leaking out.
  • Disconnect the glow plug wire and the water temperature thermostat wire.
  • Disconnect the high pressure fuel line.
  • Disconnect the upper water hose from the radiator, then disconnect the hose between the thermostat and the high pressure fuel pump.
  • Unscrew the oil level indicator tube and bracket and remove them.
  • Remove the timing belt as described in the relevant chapter.
  • Remove the cylinder head cover.
  • Remove the camshaft drive wheel and the rear camshaft belt pulley as described when disassembling the engine in chapter 2.2.2. Also remove the high pressure fuel pump drive wheel.
  • Remove the large shield at the rear of the drive wheel.
  • Release the exhaust manifold bracket, remove the exhaust pipe and exhaust manifold.
  • Remove the intake manifold.
  • Remove the cylinder head as described in disassembly chapter 2.2.2.
